How to use Slide Over in iPadOS 26.1

In iPadOS 26.1 or later, you can set one window as a Slide Over window to stay open on top of other windows.

This week Apple made some iPad fans happy with the return of Slide Over.

In iPadOS 26.1 or later, you can set one window as a Slide Over window to stay open on top of other windows. You can also move the Slide Over window off screen and bring it back when you need it.

To put an app into Slide Over

  1. Open the app you want to use in Slide Over.
  2. Tap and hold the three dots (yellow, green, and red) in the top-left corner of the app window.
  3. In the menu that appears, tap “Enter Slide Over”. The app will now have a grey border around it.

To move and resize the Slide Over window

  • Move: Drag the top of the Slide Over window to move it to the left or right side of the screen.
  • Resize: Drag the bottom-right corner of the window to resize it vertically and horizontally.
  • Hide: Swipe the window completely off the left or right edge of the screen to hide it.
  • Bring back: Swipe from the edge of the screen where you hid the window to bring it back.
  • Keyboard shortcut: You can also use the Globe + Backslash shortcut to hide and show the Slide Over window.
