How to use an external display with an iPad running  iPadOS 26

You can attach an external display to an iPad, though you can’t use the tablet in clamshell mode.

To use external displays with iPadOS 26, you can connect via USB-C or a Lightning adapter with an HDMI or VGA cable, or wirelessly with AirPlay. Once connected, iPadOS 26 supports extended desktop functionality, allowing you to run apps on both screens simultaneously, using features like Stage Manager or a new tiling option for a true multitasking experience. You can drag and drop windows or use the multitasking menu to move apps between screens. 

Wired connections 

• For iPads with a USB-C port: Use a USB-C Digital AV Multi-port Adapter or a similar hub and connect an HDMI or VGA cable to your display.
• For iPads with a Lightning connector: Use a Lightning Digital AV Adapter or a Lightning to VGA Adapter, then connect your display with an HDMI or VGA cable.
• For Apple Studio Display or Pro Display XDR: Connect directly with the included Thunderbolt cable. The iPad will charge while connected, and the display will automatically turn on. 

Wireless connection 

• Using AirPlay: Connect your iPad and Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network. However, AirPlay will mirror your screen instead of extending it. 

Managing and moving apps 

• Use Stage Manager: On supported models, turn on Stage Manager in Control Center. You can then resize, move windows, and create app sets on both screens.
• Drag and drop: Drag app windows directly from your iPad to the external display and vice versa.
• Use the multitasking menu: Touch and hold the top of an app window and tap “Move to Display” to move it to your external screen.
• Tap the app icon: On the screen you want the app to go to, tap its icon in the Dock or App Library to move its window there.
