Apple has canceled plans for a “Vision Air” to focus on developer of its own smart glasses (“Apple Glasses”), acceding to Bloomberg (a subscription is required to read the entire article).
About the ‘Vision Air’
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and others had predicted that Apple is would launch a “Vision Air” in 2027, which will address the high weight and price of the Vision Pro. The new device is estimated to be over 40% lighter and more than 50% cheaper. Kuo said shipments were anticipated to reach one million unit in 2027 (vs. existing models with shipments below 400,000 units).
Another rumor said Apple was planning a “Vision Air” version of its spatial computer featuring a thinner, lighter design and a “Midnight” blue finish is in the works. This according to the prototype collector and leaker known as “Kosutami” (as noted by MacRumors).
“Our next friend in the Vision lineup is so thin, features titanium to reduce weight, including the connectors and the battery, and all comes with iPhone 5-era black- which looks like graphite dark blue,” Kosutami said. “And be noted: this might not called as —Pro but you can Air it out.”
When it comes to follow-ups to the Apple Vision Pro, the rumors are all over the place. Apple plans to release an updated Vision Pro headset with a M4 or M5 chip in 2025, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a November 2024 “X” post. The current Vision Pro is equipped with the M2 chip, which debuted in 2022. Kuo thinks a less expensive spatial computer (which could be the “Vision Air”) has been delayed to 2027 or beyond.
However, in an October 13, 2024 “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple may release a new Vision Pro in 2025 for about US$2,000, compared to the current model’s starting price of US3,499.
He said that Apple will lower the price by using a less powerful processor and more plastic, less aluminum and glass. Gurman added that the next version of the spatial computer will also drop the EyeSight feature. EyeSight reveals your eyes on the front of your Apple Vision Pro, and lets those nearby know when you’re using apps or fully immersed in an experience.
About ‘Apple Glasses’
Apple is reportedly working on its own version of smart glasses, which most pundits have dubbed (of course) “Apple Glasses.”
In an X post, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple will release its own “smart glasses” in 2027. These will have a design more like traditional eyewear than the Apple Vision Pro.
Kuo says Apple will ship 3-5 million units or more of the device. He says core features will include audio playback, camera, video recording, and AI environmental sensing. Kue also thinks that Apple will offer multiple material options for frames and temples, with Apple actively testing 3D printing technology for production.
