With Picture-in-Picture support in iOS 14 and later, iPhone users can now watch a video or take a FaceTime call while using another app.
Well, as long as its app the supports PiP such as Apple TV, Apple Podcasts,Safari, FaceTime, iTunes, and others. However, YouTube doesn’t yet support the feature. And you can’t use PiP while playing a video in Photos. Here’s how to use the feature in iOS 16:
Enabling Picture-in-Picture
- Open Settings: on your iPhone.
- Tap on General.
- Select Picture in Picture.
- Toggle on Start PiP Automatically to have videos automatically enter PiP mode when you exit an app.
- For some apps, like YouTube, you may also need to enable the PiP setting within the app’s own settings menu.
Using Picture-in-Picture
- Start a supported video: (e.g., on YouTube or in the Apple TV app) or initiate a FaceTime call.
- Swipe up: from the bottom of the screen or press the Home button to return to your Home Screen while the video or call is playing.
- The video will shrink into a smaller PiP window in a corner of your screen.
Controlling the PiP Window
- Move the video:
Tap and drag the PiP window to a different corner of the screen. - Hide the video:
Drag the PiP window off the left or right edge of the screen to temporarily hide it. - Resize the video:
Pinch open the PiP window to make it larger, or pinch closed to make it smaller. - Close the video:
Tap the PiP window to show the controls, then tap the Close (X) button to exit the PiP mode. - Return to full-screen:
Tap the PiP window to show controls, then tap the Restore Full Screen button to return to the full video view.
