CIRP: iPhone Air looks slick, but its spot in the lineup suggest challenges’

A second generation iPhone Air could launch in fall 2026.

A new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) says the iPhone 17 looks slick, but “its spot in the lineup suggest challenges.”

The iPhone Air replaces the iPhone Plus in the model lineup, situated between the base iPhone 17 and the premium iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. Its pricing places it squarely between those models, though its advanced design may appeal to some customers drawn to premium models.

“It’s not clear what Apple wants to happen, but based on the last three years of iPhone Plus performance, they should have modest expectations,” says CIRP.

Over the past three years of availability, iPhone Plus models accounted for just over 10% of US sales in a given year. For comparison, the base and combined Pro/Pro Max models each accounted for 40% or more of unit sales. The orphan SE, mini, and recently introduced iPhone 16e, at the low end in pricing and features, garnered 5-9% of sales, with an uptick since the introduction of the 16e, notes CIRP.
