Rumor: Apple won’t release an iPhone 18 next year, but will concentrate on an ‘iPhone Fold’

A new rumor claims Apple won’t release an iPhone 18 in 2026, but will instead focus all its attention on a foldable iPhone.

Apple won’t release an iPhone 18 in 2026, but will instead focus all its attention on a foldable iPhone, according to ETNews

This would be highly unusual, and the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) is skeptical. However, the expansion of smartphone line-up with an “iPhone Fold” will see the line-up reorganized and the release time of the general iPhone changed, per ETNews.

This report differs significantly form recent reports. Apple will debut the foldable iPhone in September 2026 as part of the iPhone 18 line-up, according to JP Morgan. The bank says this year’s iPhone 17 upgrades won’t be very compelling, so Apple is banking on next year’s smartphone upgrades to spur sales. The “iPhone Fold” is expected to cost about US$2,000.

JP Morgan’s opinion lines up with previous rumors. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the “iPhone Fold” will have enough differentiating features from other foldable smartphones that it will dominate the market.

Rumors about the iPhone 18 include:

° Apple will stick with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays (rounded up) for 2027’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

° They’ll have displays that use less battery power than current models.

° The the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and so-called iPhone 18 Fold will be equipped with Apple’s A20 chip.

° They’ll have under-screen Face ID.

° They will have a major leap in memory performance.

° They will have A20 chips manufactured with TSMC’s 2nm process.

° They will sport the C2 modem, a follow-up to Apple’s C1 modem.

° They will pack a 3nm A20 processor updated for Apple Intelligence.

° Apple’s A20 chip in iPhone 18 models will switch from the previous InFo (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging to WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging.
