The widgets in iOS 16 present timely information at a glance and can be pinned in different sizes on any Home Screen page.

The widgets in iOS 16 present timely information at a glance and can be pinned in different sizes on any Home Screen page. What’s more, you can create a Smart Stack of widgets, which uses on-device intelligence to surface the right widget based on time, location, and activity.

A Smart Stack automatically rotates widgets to show the most relevant information throughout the day. Here’s how to create a Smart Stack:

  1. Enter Jiggle Mode: Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen until all your apps and widgets begin to jiggle.
  2. Open Widget Gallery: Tap the + (plus) button that appears in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Smart Stack: Scroll through the list of available widgets or use the search bar to find and select Smart Stack.
  4. Choose Widget Size: Swipe left or right on the Smart Stack widget preview to select the desired size (small, medium, or large).
  5. Add the Stack: Tap the Add Widget button to place the Smart Stack on your Home Screen.
  6. Finish Editing: Tap Done in the top-right corner of the screen to exit jiggle mode.

Using Your Smart Stack

  • Swipe:
To switch to a different widget within the stack, swipe up or down on the stack itself.
  • Smart Rotate:
The stack can automatically rotate to display the widget most relevant to the time of day or your activity, thanks to Smart Rotate.
  • Widget Suggestions:
You can also enable Widget Suggestions, which allows apps you frequently use to appear automatically in the stack when they’re likely to be helpful.
