With iPad0S 26, Apple has finally made the iPad useful for work. It still won’t replace my MacBook Pro, but accessories such as the CaseUp by ProtoArc make this a possibility for lots of folks.
The foldable keyboard/mouse combo connects via Bluetooth and also works just fine with the MacBook Pro (as long as it’s running macOS 10.10 or higher), so you can use it when on the go with either the laptop or the tablet. And at US$79.99, it’s a solid purchase.
The full size foldable keyboard and mouse combo comes in a sleek carry case, with an adjustable stand that actually holds your device. It folds flat and travels light.
The CaseUp keyboard feels like a real keyboard because, well, it is one. It’s equipped with quiet scissor switches and 16.5mm size keys. It features a number pad and separate row of shortcuts. I like the “feel” of the CaseUp keyboard, which is neither too soft nor too rigid.
There’s a USB-C port on the side for charging. ProtoArc claims up to 150 days of standby time when it comes to battery life. My one complaint: I wish it were backlit. Also, some of the keys may be more familiar to Windows and Androids rather than Mac and iPads users. However, I adapted quickly.
The tri-fold wireless keyboard folds into a smaller size (8.46 x 4.68 x 0.78 in), saving carrying space. This design not only facilitates portability and storage but also allows you to quickly unfold the keyboard to start work whenever and wherever you are. Another nice feature: it powers off automatically when closed.
I’m less enthused about the CaseUp mouse. It’s small (2.17 inches wide, 10.08 inches deep, and 0.31 inches high) and ergonomic. I can’t really put my finger (pun intended) why I find it disappointing. It just pales in comparison to the Apple Magic Mouse.
That said, the CaseUp mouse works just fine with a Mac or iPad. And the advantage it has over the Apple mouse is its smaller size and portability. It fits, along with the keyboard, in the accompanying case for taking both accessories with you.
Like the keyboard, the CaseUp mouse charges via USB-C but has a slightly longer battery life of up to 200 days (standby time).
Despite some slight complaints, overall the CaseUp combo is great for folks taking Mac laptops or iPads on-the-go. The whole thing packs away neatly and securely without having to worry about battery life.
