UBB4 Slim NVMe SSD offers a way to expand your device’s storage without paying Apple’s exorbitant upgrade pricing

Satechi's UBB4 Slim NVMe SSD offers a way to expand your device’s storage without paying Apple’s exorbitant upgrade pricing.

Most of us have an ever-growing collection of photos, videos, and movies that quickly eat up disk space. Apple charges a hefty fee for solid state drives updates on its devices, so there’s a need for affordable external storage.

For example, to upgrade the base model 13-inch MacBook Air from its default (and insufficient) 256GB of SSD storage to 1TB adds $400 to the price tag, while upgrading to 2TB of SSD storage will set you pack an additional $800.

With that in mind, Satechi’s USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure is a great value. It’s a high-performance storage solution targeted to, in Satechi’s words, “creators, professionals, and gamers on the move.” But it’s a good value for just about everyone.

The UBB4 Slim NVMe SSD provides transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps, support for multiple SSD sizes, up to 8TB of capacity, and a travel-ready design. It allows you to skip Apple’s expensive internal upgrades and take advantage high-speed, on-the-go storage for backing up files, swapping between setups, or simply adding more storage to your Mac or iPad.

The USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure supports SSD sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 with expandable storage from 1TB up to 8TB.

Design-wise, the Satechi device is inspired by Apple’s discontinued USB SuperDrive. It’s very slim, but has a durable aluminum build with a soft-touch coating and silver-and-black finish. A hidden cable compartment keeps its braided cable neatly stored. Integrated cooling vents and a thermal pad keep the UBB4 Slim NVMe SSD humming along without getting hot.

The enclosure supports a wide range of devices – the Mac Mini M4, PCs, MacBooks, iPads, and more – and works with Thunderbolt 5/4/3 and USB4 host devices. It’s backward-compatible with USB-C devices, with performance adjusting based on connection type. With plug-and-play functionality, no additional drivers or external power sources are required.

The USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure is available for US$119.99. Of course, you’ll need to purchase a SSD separately. Pricing for SSDs range from about $99 for 1TB of storage to about $600 for 8TB.
