Twelve South’s new PowerBug is a fantastic product for folks like me who need a Qi2/MagSafe and USB-charger combo in a slim design.
The US$49.99 accessory can be placed conveniently anywhere there’s an outlet. And with its small form factor, it’s easy to stash it a suitcase for backpack for traveling with your Apple devices.
When it comes to the iPhone, the PowerPug holds the smartphone upright and charging in portrait or landscape mode without the need for cords. This is handy for making a FaceTime call, watching a movie (well, if that’s your grove; I’d never watch a film on the iPhone’s small screen), or glancing at your calendar in Stand By mode.
The PowerBug also packs a USB-C connector that enables up to 35W of fast charging for any USB device. I use it to charge my iPad or AirPods Pro when traveling for work on on vacation.
As for the tech aspects, the PowerBug is designed to deliver up to 15W of Qi2 wireless fast charging, which is the maximum allowed by the Qi2 standard for compatible phones, including MagSafe iPhones. When using the USB-C port, it can deliver up to 35W total output, allowing you to fast charge another device at higher speeds while wirelessly charging at up to 15W..
Speaking of travel, the peripheral can be plugged into an outlet in a waiting area of an airport. Once you’re on your plane, it can be plugged into the power outlet below or in front of your seat.
When you’re not using it, the PowerBug folds flat with storable prongs. You should note that if you’re traveling internationally, you may need to find an alternative to the Twelve South device. The PowerBug is rated for 100–240V AC but is designed specifically for Type A outlets. International use isn’t recommended, although it’s possible with proper voltage-compatible adapters. You’ll have to track those down on your own, as none are included with the PowerBug.
If you’re traveling in the U.S., and only need to charge an iPhone and a second USB-C device, the PowerBug is fantastic. (But note that if you’re like me and own an Apple Watch, you’ll have to pack a separate Apple Watch charger.)
