According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), Apple needs to pay more attention to its MacBook Air.
The research group says that for “completely understandable reasons, Apple doesn’t seem to pay much attention to its computer business anymore. From the CIRP report: Long ago, switching computer users from Windows to Macs was everything. Now, Apple wants smartphone users to switch from Android to iOS. Of course, in 2025 Apple continues to sell computers, and they do contribute revenue and profit and are worth our consideration.
Apple and its Windows PC competitors have meaningful desktop computer businesses, but for non-gamers, any remaining excitement is in laptops. For the past ten years, with a minor detour for the ultra-light MacBook, Apple’s laptop business was divided between MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. MacBook Pro has accounted for the majority of Apple laptop sales the entire time. Still, in more recent years MacBook Air improved its share – until this past year.
In the most recent twelve-month period ending this past March, the MacBook Pro captured 63% of US laptop sales. The MacBook Air had 37% of laptop sales, more than its 31% share in 2015, but lower than the past few years. CIRP thinks Apple should put more effort into promoting the MacBook Air, which is a laptop targeted to folks who don’t need all the power of the Pro.
