Rumor: Apple won’t release any Macs with M5 processors this year

In a surprising twist, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple won’t refresh any Macs with updated M5 chips this year.

In a surprising twist, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says Apple won’t refresh any Macs with updated M5 chips this year, and that the iPad Pro will be the first Apple device to get a M5 processor

Updated MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are now planned for the first half of 2026, he adds. This mirrors the rollout of the M4 processor when the iPad Pro was the first Apple product to get the processor.

We should see the M5 iPad Pro this fall. Samsung Display and LG Display have begun mass production of OLED displays for Apple’s upcoming M5 iPad Pros, reports DigiTimes (a subscription is required to read the article). The upcoming tablet update is expected to pack the more powerful processor. Beyond that, no design changes are planned.

The iPad Pro will purportedly be the first device with a M5 chip.

Perhaps the 2026 M5 MacBook Pro will be the long-awaited laptop with an OLED display and a cellular option. MacBook Pros with OLED displays have been rumored to be coming for over three years.

I definitely want an OLED MacBook Pro. But what I want even more is one with a cellular option. This would be a major step for Apple as it’s yet to introduce any sort of cellular capability for its Mac laptop line. Various iPad models have various cellar options, so why not Mac laptops with built-in 5G?

Now that Apple has built its own modem (the C1), there’s no reason why this shouldn’t happen. And let’s hope an OLED MacBook Pro offers the next version of the C1.

And perhaps the MacBook Pro that is due in the first half of next year will be the one that sports a total redesign. Last November Gurman said the 2026 pro laptop would have a thinner design.

Here’s Gurman says is coming from Apple next year:

  • iPhone 17e – Updated A19 chip, could launch in February.
  • MacBook Air – M5 chips.
  • MacBook Pro – M5 chips.
  • Updated Apple Display – A follow up to the Apple Studio Display and Pro Display XDR.
  • Low-cost iPad – Will get a faster chip. Slated for March/April.
  • iPad Air – Expected to get M4 chip. March/April launch timeline.
  • Smart home hub – Expected in the first half of next year.
