The experiment is over: my MacBook Pro, not my iPad OS 26-equipped iPad Pro, will remain my daily workhorse

Here is my experimental work set-up: iPad Pro (with iPadOS 26), Apple Studio Display and Magic Mouse.

My experiment of trying to do all my Apple World Today work on an iPad with iPadOS 26 installed has come to an end — and I’ll continue to use my Mac as my daily workhorse.

That said, I have been able to keep AWT up and going with a 12.9-inch iPad attached to an Apple Studio Display for a week. What’s really impressive is that I ran the first developer beta of iPadOS 26 on my tablet with few hiccups (there’s now a second beta out).

The fact is that I can still do my work faster and with more fluidity on my Mac. As I mentioned previously, one complaint is that I want to be able to open two Pages documents simultaneously. I can’t with iPadOS 26, and this seems kinda silly with all the multitasking and file management improvements Apple gave us.

If that were the only issue, I could live with it. However, dealing with screenshots is sooooo much easier on the Mac. On my MacBook Pro, I can take a screenshot of an image and have it immediately appear in Pixelmator Pro. There I can quickly edit it, then use it in an AWT article.

The process is much more kludgy in iPadOS 26. I save screenshots in the Files app (though the operating system wants to save ‘em in Photos by default). From there I import it into the new Preview iPad app, edit it, then insert it in a blog post.

This is a waste of time compared to the Mac process. There may be a better way; if so, I’m open to suggestions.

If I could run Pixelmator Pro on iPad as I do on a Mac, this would resolve my problems. Apple acquired Pixelmator in February, so maybe this will happen soon.

Some folks have other issues with using an iPad running iPadOS 26 as their main computing device for work. One of the biggest complaints is that the operating system STILL doesn’t offer multi-user support. That’s not an issue with me, as I’m the only person allowed to use my work machine (the aforementioned MacBook Pro) without my personal supervision.

Despite the fact that, much to my disappointment, I still can’t use my iPad Pro for all my computing needs, iPadOS is a massive leap forward and inches closer to that goal.

Still, it’s not there yet, so I will continue to use my Mac and my iPad for different purposes. And I’m sure Apple is perfectly happy that I still need both devices.
