I can’t wait to get my hands on iPadOS 26. I’ve written many times that I wish I could use my iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. Now it might just happen.
In an ideal world (at least in my ideal world), I’d able to run macOS on my iPad. However, that’s not happening, so iPadOS might be the next best thing. It’s new windowing system and better multitasking/file management features sound extremely promising.
After all, the iPad hardware, especially the iPad Pro, is as powerful, if not more powerful, as most laptops. With the M4 processor, it has all the computing power I need. And I love the portability and versatility of the tablet. However, iPadOS has simply been too limiting in lots of respects, especially when it comes to multi-tasking. iPadOS 26 looks like it could change this.
“For years Apple has tried to evolve iPad OS to provide more functionality without breaking the device’s appealing core of simplicity. To date, these evolutions have failed to land with most users,” says Tom Mainelli, Group Vice President, IDC. “Today they showed iPadOS 26, and it seems the company may have cracked the code. By offering many of the affordance of macOS to the touch-screen iPad, including the ability to launch and size multiple windows, Apple may finally be on course to deliver an iPad OS that’s as good as the iPad hardware—especially the iPad Pro—the company consistently delivers.”
Plus, an iPad has some advantages over the Mac: the ability to get a cellular version; the ability to back up files to iCloud; and the ability to use an Apple Pencil.”
I won’t know if the iPad Pro can become my main computer until I experiment with iPadOS. But I’m really excited to give it a try.
