I’ve long wanted to be able to use my 12.9-inch iPad Pro as my main computing device. However, the operating system has always been too limiting to make this possible.
It’s simply been too kludgy trying to run Apple World Today with iPadOS. However, iPadOS 26 has checked a lot of the boxes for features I’ve long wanted.
So for the past three days I’ve been using my iPad Pro running iPadOS 26 to run AWT. So far, so (mostly) good, though there is the occasional crash as you’d expect with very early beta software.
I decided to live dangerously and install the first developer betra of iPadOS. It’s been surprisingly stable.
And I’ve been able to use it as my daily workhorse with more ease than I ever have in the past. Despite some complaints, I like the Liquid Glass look and haven’t found it to negatively affect readability.
I have my iPad attached to an Apple Studio Display and paired with a Magic Mouse for my work set-up. It works very well so far, though I do have two things I’d like to see Apple fix immediately.
One: I want to be able to open two Pages documents simultaneously. I can’t (unless I’m missing something; if I am, please tell me), and this seems kinda silly with all the multitasking and file management improvements Apple gave us.
Two: Taking a screenshot, cropping it, and importing it into a WordPress article is a bit awkward. For some reason, iPadOS automatically stores screenshots in the Photos app when I want to save them to Files. At least there’s a way to do this.
To save screenshots directly to the Files app on iPadOS 26, you can choose “Save to Files” when taking a screenshot. This will allow you to save it as a PDF file within the Files app instead of storing it in the Photos app.
This is still kludgy compared to how I do it with macOS. On my MacBook, I simply take a screenshot and it’s automatically stored in Pixelmator Pro for easy cropping and editing. Hopefully, I’ll eventually be able to do this with iPadOS 26.
Will the iPad Pro replace my MacBook Pro? That’s yet to be determined, though I’d this to happen because 1) my iPad Pro has built-in cellar and my laptop doesn’t, and 2) iPadOS will back up files to iCloud automatically and macOS doesn’t.
iPad OS 26 is still in the developer beta testing stage, so I’ll keep experimenting as updates are issued. And, of course, dear reader, I’ll keep you posted.
