Apple’s upcoming macOS Tahoe will add an iPhone app, and it just might hint at cellular Macs. I certainly hope so.
Here’s how Apple describes the Phone app on the next version of the Mac operating system: “Make and take calls with a click. Conveniently access your synced content like Recents, Contacts, and Voicemail — and enjoy the familiar features from iPhone.” Users will also be able to manage unwanted calls and have Hold Assist help out while waiting for a live agent to pick up the call.”
Writing for BGR, Jose Adorno says the app is the first reason to believe a Mac with cellular might be coming. While Apple also added the app to the iPad, it’s important to highlight that it’s still impossible to use the iPad’s eSIM to make calls on its own as of iPadOS 26 beta 1.
The second reason Jose thinks we’ll see a cellular Mac is that is the fact that Apple now makes its own 5G modems. While the company’s C1 chip underperforms Qualcomm’s processors in basically every task, it has proven that it handles battery life and overall performance much better, and the main example here is the new iPhone 16e.
While I’d love to see a cellular Mac this year, Apple’s next version of its modem probably won’t arrive until next year. So that’s probably when we’ll see a Mac with a cellular option. 2026 is also the year that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the MacBook Pro will get a new, slimmer design and an OLED display.
I definitely want an OLED MacBook Pro. But what I want even more is one with a cellular option. This would be a major step for Apple as it’s yet to introduce any sort of cellular capability for its Mac laptop line. Various iPad models have various cellar options, so why not Mac laptops with built-in 5G?
