Apple is working on specialized chips for Macs, AI services — and smart glasses that would compete with Meta’s Ray-Bans, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
The chip is purportedly in development now. Gurman says Apple targeting mass production in 2026 or 2027 for a launch in the next two years or so.
Gurmann says the chip being designing for “Apple Glasses” is based on chips that are used in the Apple Watch. These SoCs use less energy than the chips in devices like the iPhone, and Apple has already optimized it to improve power efficiency, he adds.
It was reported in November 2024 that Apple was purportedly conducing an in-house survey on the feasibility of “Apple Glasses.” The initiative, code-named Atlas, involves gathering feedback from Apple employees on smart glasses.
If they materialize, Apple Glasses will be an augmented reality/virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) that would be more akin in design to regular eyeglasses than the Vision Pro.
