Tariffs are on, tariffs are off. You need a scoreboard to keep up with the latest Trump tariff developments.
An interesting one is that the President says he changed his mind about tariffs after talking with Apple CEO Tim Cook. On Saturday it was announced that electronics imported to the U.S. for companies such as Apple will be exempt from tariffs, according to a US Customs and Border Protection notice. The exemption applies to products entering the United States or removed from warehouses as early as April 5, according to the notice.
In talking with reporters he said that “he helped Tim Cook recently.” Trump also said that he doesn’t change his mind, but is flexible. I’m not sure what that means, but, alrighty then.
However, it’s unclear how long he’s willing to “help” Cook and Apple. Smartphones, laptops, and other products that are exempt from Trump’s April 9 tariffs will be lumped in with duties on semiconductors in “a month or two,” according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick — as noted by The Verge.
