The Mac now has 14.8% of the U.S. personal computer (PC) market and 17.1% of the global PC market, according to new data from Canalys.
The fourth quarter of 2024 saw Apple eclipse Lenovo for the third overall spot in vendor rankings, achieving this position for the first time since the third quarter of 2022, notes the research group.
“Apple enjoyed 26% annual growth for Mac shipments to the US, breaking the 3-million-unit mark in quarter four,” says Canalys Analyst Greg Davis. “The Windows refresh cycle provides fertile ground for Apple to target both consumers and businesses that may be open to switching operating systems. Historically, manageability and compatibility issues were highlighted as reasons for larger commercial customers to eschew Apple products. However, many of those issues have been addressed by Apple, and along with more competitive pricing and a revamp of its channel partner program later this year, 2025 is set to see Mac make market share gains within the commercial segment.”
According to Canalys, Apple sold over three million Macs in the US in the fourth quarter of 2024 for 17.1% market share. That compares to sales of 2.6 million and 15.7% market share in the fourth quarter of 2023. Ahead of Apple in the US PC space are HP (25.5% market share) and Dell (20.8% market share).
According to Canalys, Apple sold over 10 million Macs globally in the fourth quarter of 2024 for 14.8% market share. That compares to sales of 8.9 million and 13.6% market share in the fourth quarter of 2023. Ahead of Apple in the global PC space are HP (25.3% market share), (22.8% market share), and Lenovo (17.2% market share).
(Note that Canalys doesn’t count tablets such as the iPad as a true personal computer).
