Apple is reportedly developing a gaming-centric Apple TV or a standalone gaming console, “signaling its intent to make a deeper impact in the gaming industry,” reports Geeky-Gadgets.
The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) is 99% sure that Apple isn’t developing a standalone gaming console. However, a gaming-focused Apple TV could be in the works.
From Geeky-Gadgets: “This move could reshape the company’s presence in the gaming market, using its expertise in hardware and software integration. With the potential inclusion of advanced chipsets like the A17 Pro or A18 Pro, this device could significantly enhance gaming performance on Apple platforms. However, challenges such as revenue-sharing policies and limited exclusive game development may present hurdles.”
About the ill-fated Pippin
The tech giant did try its hand at making a game console, but it didn’t go well. The Pippin (pictured below) was released in 1996 and discontinued in 1997.

Apple collaborated with Japanese toy and video game company Bandai to make the Pippin game machine. It turned out to be a tremendous flop. Apple sold only 42,000 units.
I don’t think that the company will enter the market again. Not when it already has a plethora of device that can play games.
A game-focused Apple TV set-top box
Apple is expected to release a new version of its Apple TV set-top box. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks it will arrive later this year and sport an Apple-designed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip.
I think the next version could support 4K resolution at at 120Hz, an HDMI 2.1 port for better gaming. The current Apple TV set-top box is equipped with an HDMI 2.0 port, which is limited to 4K resolution at 60Hz.

I also think the next Apple TV could come with an Apple-made game controller (that would also work with Macs, iPhones, and iPads) — or at least have such an accessory available as an option.
