Apple has updated its Maps app to display traditional Aboriginal names for places across Australia, reports The Australian.
The Maps update has been a four-year project, with Apple saying it has only scratched the surface in highlighting how technology can help preserve culture and enhance education, the article adds. The company has worked with indigenous advisers, cartographers, traditional owners, language holders, and community members to complete the automatic upgrade, which went live on Thursday afternoon.
Indigenous groups can also submit pictures of their local communities to create place cards “to generate further awareness, and a similar update has been launched in New Zealand,” notes The Australian.
