Apple considers adding protective trims to Mac laptops for increased durability

Apple has filed for a patent that shows it’s considering adding “protective trims” to Mac laptops to increase durability.

Apple has filed for a patent (US 20250036163 A1) that shows it’s considering adding “protective trims” to Mac laptops to increase durability.

About the patent filing

In the patent filing, Apple notes that modern consumer electronic devices take many shapes and forms, and have numerous uses and functions. Laptop computers, for example, are common types of computers that provide computing functions in a lightweight, portable form factor. Laptop computers may include input devices, such as keyboards and trackpads, and may have displays to produce graphical outputs.

However, such devices can be easily damaged. Apple’s idea for better protection is that a Mac laptop display may also include a trim member bonded to the housing that defines a protruding portion extending proud of the display surface and an interior portion formed along the peripheral mounting surface. A gap between the display cover and the housing would offer a bit of shock protection. What’s more, the laptop may additionally include a base portion comprising a keyboard and pivotally coupled to the display portion.

Summary of the patent filing

Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent filing: “A laptop computer may include a base portion having a keyboard and a display portion flexibly coupled to the base portion and positionable in an open configuration relative to the base portion and in a closed configuration relative to the base portion. The display portion may include a display stack, a display cover positioned over the display stack and may define a peripheral side surface and an exterior surface.

“A housing may define a side exterior surface of the display portion and may extend at least partially around a periphery of the display cover, and a trim member. The trim member may be positioned between the display cover and the housing. The trim member may be bonded to a peripheral side surface of the display cover and define a protruding portion.”
