I don’t think Apple plans 90Hz displays; ProMotion screens makes more sense

There are rumors that Apple plans a “Studio Display Pro” with ProMotion support— and a new report shows there’s a good reason why it should.

As noted by 9to5Mac, a rumor suggests Apple is developing a 90Hz display that could be destined for the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display. The rumor comes from an anonymous source who reached out to the Upgrade podcast hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell.

Currently, the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display all feature displays with 60Hz refresh rates. This rumor suggests the 90Hz panel will first appear on the M3 iPad Air and eventually make its way to the 24-inch iMac and Studio Display.

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) says this makes no sense. Why 90Hz instead of 120Hz, which would be better for gaming? If Apple does update the displays, it would only make sense for it to go with ProMotion monitors. While a standard refresh rate will update a display 60 times a second (60Hz), the ProMotion’s adaptive 120Hz screen works at twice this speed. This results in smoother scrolling, improved responsiveness and better gaming performance.
