Could the Apple Car project be revived?

Apple canned its long-in-the-works Apple Car project in February, but a rumor suggests it might not be entirely dead.

DigiTimes claimed in a May 7 report that “speculation has surfaced among supply chains that Apple is studying the possibility of working with an Electric Vehicle (EV) startup company.”

The article — which requires a subscription to read — notes that even though EV sales have overall been disappointing, Rivian’s delivery vehicle partnership with Amazon remains strong, and could even factor into Apple’s interest.

“A partnership with Rivian might also indirectly involve Amazon, which could open the door to collaboration between Apple and Amazon in generative AI, the sources said,” adds DigiTimes.

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) is skeptical that Apple would reenter the EV market after the Apple Car project cancellation. However, the tech giant is still applying for patents regarding vehicles. And I’ve long said that if Apple really wanted to get into the car business, it should partner with a current car manufacturer, and not start from scratch.

Guess we’ll see if the Apple Car project could return from the dead.
