Apple patent involves adjustable cushions for the Apple Vision Pro

The Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York, has announced the First Literature Project exhibit, the first VR media produced in the Shinnecock Language. And it utilizes the Apple Vision Pro.

Apple continues to look for ways to make wearing the Vision Pro for long periods of time more comfortable. The latest is for “adjustable cushions” in a newly granted patent (number US 12124042 B2).

About the patent

The patent involves an electrically adjustable face cushion for the Vision Pro. The face cushion may be attached to a rear-facing peripheral edge of the head-mounted support structure and may have a ring shape. The electrically adjustable face cushion may have adjustable elements such as adjustable inflation air bags.

Airflow control systems formed from electrically adjustable airflow valves, check valves, and air pumps may be used in controlling inflation of the adjustable inflation air bags in responses to changes in the operating mode of the head-mounted device and/or in response to sensor data or other input. The sensor data may include strain gauge measurements of facial pressure on the air bags.

Summary of the patent

Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent: “A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing. The head-mounted housing may have rear-facing displays that display images for a user. The images are viewable from eye boxes while the head-mounted device is being worn by the user. An electrically adjustable face cushion may be provided between the head-mounted housing and the user’s face.
