AI laptops predicted to see skyrocketing sales for the next five years

Apple will probably introduce new Macs on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says in his latest “Power On” newsletter.

This should be great news for Mac laptops: Counterpoint Research has raised its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) forecast for artificial intelligence (AI) laptops.

AI-advanced laptops and AI-capable laptops are now expected to achieve a 5-year CAGR of 49% and 12%, respectively, between 2025 and 2029, notes the research group. In April 2024, Counterpoint updated its generative AI laptop forecasts and said that three out of four laptops sold in 2027 will be AI laptops, including AI advanced laptops and AI-capable laptops, which can support generative AI functions with its main processors (GPUs/NPUs).

“We believe the growing trend will continue,” says the research group. “AI-featured applications and use cases are also crucial for AI PC expansion and deployment, which requires support from the whole PC ecosystem. We also observed that in the AI PC era, semiconductor content benefits from spec upgrades across different components, including CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and memory.”

Overall, in its base case forecasts, Counterpoint expect sgenerative AI laptops to account for 79% of the total laptop market by 2027, with the largest jump in shipments set to occur in 2025-2026.

The Canalys research group says Apple is waiting for the M4 MacBook launch to regain shipment momentum. AI laptops such as the M4 MacBook will expand the AI PC market in the second half of 2024, according to Counterpoint Senior Analyst William Li.

What’s more, Apple has filed for a patent (US 20240273335 A1) for a customizable chip for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. It involves processors for running Macs (as well as iPads and iPhones) using the upcoming Apple Intelligence features.

The company is rolling out Apple Intelligence to customers as part of software updates coming this month, next month, and into 2025, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. That means the AI features will arrive a few weeks after the initial macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, iPadOS 18 releases planned for September. In fact, users will have to wait until 2025 to see the fully revamped Siri with Apple Intelligence features.

Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into the latest versions of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. Here are all the features of Apple Intelligence as listed by Apple in a press release.
