It’s anticipated that we’ll get M4-equipped MacBook Pros this year. And M5-based versions may arrive next year, if analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is correct.

According to a now-deleted post to X by Display Supply — as noted by AppleInsider — Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young, panel shipments started in July and August for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. He said that a fourth quarter launch for the M4-equipped models “makes sense” based on these shipments.

Counterpoint Research says Apple is waiting for the M4 MacBook launch to regain shipment momentum of laptops. AI [artificial intelligence] laptops such as the M4 MacBook will expand the AI PC market in H2 2024, according to Counterpoint Senior Analyst William Li.

So why is an M5 MacBook Pro next year. From a Medium post by Kuo: “Sunny Optical will become Apple’s new CCM supplier in 2025, with mass production and shipments in Vietnam for the CCM of the new M5 series MacBook models. Given that Sunny Optical is a first-tier CCM supplier in the world, if MacBook CCM shipments go smoothly, Sunny Optical may become the new CCM supplier for iPhone and iPad in the future.”

As far as future MacBook Pros beyond the M4 model, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said that Apple is working on a thinner version of the MacBook Pro. He says it’s inspired by the ultrathin 2024 iPad Pro.
