Opinion: new VR devices will shake up education

Apple confirms that Spectrum is bringing NBA games to Apple Immersive on the Vision Pro.

This could be good news for the Apple Vision Pro: almost a decade ago, 85%of teachers surveyed mentioned that they’d love to utilize Virtual Reality devices in the classroom. This was, as you’d imagine, pre-pandemic — so some of these reasons were put into use come 2020.

And parents who would like homeschooling as an option, see Virtual Reality school as “the ultimate school choice.”

“Virtual reality in the classroom has the opportunity to be one of the industry’s biggest investors,” says Rolf Illenberger, the founder and CEO of VRdirect, an enterprise software solution that works with several major global companies including Siemens, Lufthansa, Nestle and Porsche. “Not to mention universities and schools like the TUM University in Munich.’

Getting into the classroom is a big push for Meta, who will make available a suite of visually engrossing education apps that teachers can use with students ages 13+. Teachers will be able to manage multiple Quest devices at once, without the need for each device to be individually prepared and updated. And if you know anything about Apple, the Apple II was one of the first computers used in schools and Apple’s educational sales saved the business during much of the 1990s and early 2000s.

“VR also has the opportunity to democratize the classroom as well,” Illenberger suggests. “Especially in the United States, where things like private schools and charter schools are more popular. Much like colleges and universities have satellite programs, elementary and high schools could duplicate the practice for VR based degrees and certificates.”
