2024 iPads could adopt ‘hybrid’ OLED technology

Apple may adopt a “hybrid” OLED technology in 2024 iPads that could allow for slimmer devices while lowering production costs, according to DigiTimes (a subscription is required to read the entire article).

From the article: Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology (Taiwan SMT) will undertake SMT process for mini LED backlighting of 12.9-inch iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, becoming an Apple supply chain maker for the first time, according to industry sources.

This isn’t the first rumor of OLED iPads. In July Apple confirmed that an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display iPad will be released — in 2024, according to ET News. The article says the updated tablets will boast improved picture quality and be lightweight.

The Elec says Apple will also introduce the iPad OLED display dry etching process for the first time. Display dry etching is a process of removing unnecessary parts using chemical technology when making thin film transistor (TFT) circuit patterns. The display can be etched to make the display thinner and lighter.

OLED may be better than LCD when it comes to brightness and color ratios, but the latter is more cost-effective option. Mini-LED aims to offer the best of both worlds.

For example, the 2021 iPad Pro with Mini-LED technology can achieve 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness with 1,600 nits of specular highlights, with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and wide DCI-P3 color gamut. Packaged into a design that’s just 6.4mm thin.
