Will It Work? iPhone NeXTstation

iPhone NeXTstation

It’s been a while since we featured one of Niles Mitchell’s Will It Work? tech mashups here on AWT, and this one has a lot of interesting features. Niles has a great handle on the history of Apple, NeXT, and Steve Jobs, and in this video he pays homage to the NeXTstation, which was one of the computers from NeXT in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The NeXTstation ran the NeXTSTEP operating system, which was highly lauded for its UNIX-based design, security, speed and user interface. NeXTSTEP was the primary reason Apple purchased NeXT in 1996, as the company was faltering in its own attempts to create a new Mac operating system.

There’s a little bit of NeXT in every current Apple device, so it’s not entirely surprising that Niles was able to connect an iPhone running iOS 16 to a NeXT keyboard and mouse. He also added a magneto-optical drive to the mix, although it’s not one of the drives used by NeXT.

Sit back and enjoy the video!
