While educational apps might benefit your or your kids’ learning, they can harm your privacy. The Atlas VPN team says that 98% of iOS apps within the education category collect user data.
Atlas VPN says that, on average, one educational application for iOS harvests data across more than 8 data segments, such as name, email, phone number, location, payment information, and search history, to name a few, the report says. Highlights from the report:
- 98% of educational apps for iOS collect user data.
- On average, one educational app for iOS collects user data across 8 segments.
- The most data-hungry application is the language learning app Duolingo which collects user information across 19 segments.
- Next up are Busuu and Google Classroom — each of the apps harvests data across 17 segments.
- The most commonly collected data type is identifiers, such asdevice and user IDs(88%), followed by contact information, such as name, phone number, physical address, and email (84%).
- 28% of apps also collect location data, while 22% collect search history.
