Review: Scosche PowerVolt Traveler30

Scosche PowerVolt Traveler 30Scosche PowerVolt Traveler 30 features both AC and DC inputs, USB-C output

Gallium Nitride (GaN) chargers provide a lot of power in a small package. The new Scosche PowerVolt Traveler30 ($44.99) is a prime example! This small charger can be plugged into a standard North American AC wall jack or 12V auto power port. It offers 30W USB-C Power Delivery (PD) for ultra-fast charging of your devices.

Design: Scosche PowerVolt Traveler30

To say that this is a compact travel charger is an understatement! It’s approximately 2.4 inches (6.1cm) square and slightly over .75 inch (1.9 cm) thick. Two standard 120/240V power prongs fold flat when not in use. The Traveler30 can be used almost anywhere internationally with the proper plug adapter.

For use in a car, there’s a swiveling 12V plug. Output is through a single USB-C port. Connecting to a device requires an appropriate USB-C to Lightning/USB-C/USB-A cable (not included).

Function

I used the Scosche PowerVolt Traveler30 during a recent three-week RV camping trip, where I quickly made it my “go-to” charge adapter. It’s small enough to be tucked away into a cable bag I have. I plugged it into one of the two 12V ports in the Ford Transit 350HD van to charge my iPad Pro while driving. When we were hooked to shore power or running the generator, I plugged into a regular 120V outlet.

The USB-C outlet port is perfect for charging. Whether I was charging my iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPad Pro, or Apple Watch, there’s an appropriate cable with USB-C on one end. 30W max output is sufficient for fast charging of the iPhone and iPad Pro.

It was also very useful for charging two other devices — a Ricoh Theta X VR camera and a DJI Mini Pro 3 drone. Not having to take along three or four charging bricks really makes a difference when packing!
