India’s government will hold a meeting with industry stakeholders to consider the adoption of a common charger mandate for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices, reports Mint. If passed, it would require all such devices to adopt USB-C chargers.
The article adds that the meeting with sector-specific organizations will assess the possibility of ending the use of multiple chargers in India and reduce the burden on consumers besides preventing e-waste.
India’s government is considering a proposal already passed by the European Union. Last month the EU approved a provisional agreement on the amended Radio Equipment Directive that establishes a single charging solution for certain electronic devices. This law is a part of a broader EU effort to make products in the EU more sustainable, to reduce electronic waste, and make consumers’ lives easier.
By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will become the common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU. The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) doesn’t think this will affect Apple too much; I believe all upcoming iPhones and iPads will use USB-C for charging.
