Apple’s Mac now has 15.3% of the U.S. personal computer market

Mac sales down 17.5% annually? No, they’re up 3.5%!

A report by IDC earlier today claims that the Mac’s worldwide market share was down 4.6% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2022. However, a report by the Gartner research group says the Mac’s global market share was UP 9.3% from the second quarter of 2021 to the second quarter of 2022.

Well, you know what they say: 99% of all statistics are made up. That said, Gartner says worldwide personal computer (PC) shipments totaled 72 million units in the second quarter of 2022, a 12.6% decline from the second quarter of 2021 with only Apple experiencing growth in the second quarter of 2022 thanks to sales of M.x-equipped Macs.

The global picture

Apple sold 6.4 million Macs in the quarter for 8.8% worldwide market share, per Gartner. That compares to sales of 5.8 million in the second quarter of 2021, when Apple had 7.1% market share.

Gartner doesn’t count iPads as personal computers. If it did, Apple’s PC market share would be much higher.

Gartner says the top three vendors in the worldwide PC market experienced declines in PC shipments in the second quarter of 2022, but their ranking remained unchanged. (Apple is in fourth place). The combination of HP declining 27.5% and Dell declining 5.2% allowed Dell to move to within 0.3 percentage points of HP in market share.

The research says Lenovo sold 17.9 million PCs for 24.8% market share in the second quarter of 2022, while HP sold 13.5 million units (18.8% market share) and Dell sold 13.3 million units (18.% market share).

The U.S. picture

In the U.S. Apple sold 3.1 million Macs in the second quarter of 2022, giving it 15.3% of the U.S. PC market. That compares to sales of 2.6 million in the first quarter of 2021 for 10.5% market share.

According to Gartner, as of the second quarter of 2022, Apple trails Dell (27% market share), HP (22.3% market share), and Lenovo (16.4%) market share in the U.S. PC market
