Worldwide shipments of traditional personal computers (PCs) declined 15.3% year-over-year to 71.3 million units in the second quarter of 2022 (2Q22), according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker.
While rankings among the top three companies did not change, Apple did manage to slip into the fifth position, tying the company with ASUS, as production dipped during the quarter. As a result, Acer found itself in fourth place this cycle. Barring any further supply issues, IDC expects Apple to ramp up its production in the second half of the year.
However, Apple’s Mac was affected like the rest of the industry. The research group says Apple sold 4.8 million computers during the second quarter of 2022 for 6.7% global market share.
That’s down from sales of 6.2 million (and 7.3% market share) in the year-ago quarter. However, you should note that IDC doesn’t count iPads as a personal computer. If it did, the research group’s tally of Apple’s PC market share would be much higher.
Ahead of Apple in the rankings of global PC makers for the second quarter of 2022 were: Lenovo (17.5 million sales, 24.6% market share); HP (135 million sales, 18.9% market share); Dell (13.2 million sales, 18.5% market share), and Acer (5 million sales, 6.9% market share).
This was the second consecutive quarter of lower shipments following two years of growth. IDC says the decline was worse than expected as supply and logistics further deteriorated due to the lockdowns in China and persistent macroeconomic headwinds.
