What every aspiring ‘Youtuber’ needs

By Eric Ross

Starting out with your YouTube career is no easy feat. There are so many things that you need to do and stuff that you need to learn. There are also a lot of things that you need to buy, such as cameras for youtube, ring lights and more.

So, what does every aspiring youtuber need for a successful channel? It ultimately depends on the channel’s niche, but there are some things that the vast majority of youtubers are going to need if they want to get anywhere on the big wide world of the internet.

External Microphones

Every good video needs audio. Of course, who wants to listen to audio that sounds unprofessional and grainy sounding? That’s right – nobody does. With that in mind, it’s worth your time to invest in an external microphone to use for your youtube channel. A good quality microphone will help to ensure that you can capture the audio without any background noise, and some allow you to make adjustments as you go. Ensure that the microphone works properly with your computer or laptop. You can also help to get good audio quality by choosing a location with noise cancelling properties to eliminate the background noise.

A Good Quality Camera

If you are going to be recording things to put into a youtube video, which many people do, then you’re going to need to record on a good quality camera. Your mom’s old iphone or the camera your family used in the 90s simply isn’t going to cut it. You don’t want something with terrible quality that’s going to give you poor visuals and equally terrible sound. Instead, you should look for a newer model camera that will give you high quality visuals when you record. You should find something that can sync with your computer properly so that you can edit and upload it. Other things to look for include external microphone inputs, face perfecting features and mirrored flip up screens.

Editing Software

There are some videos that may not require a lot of editing, and that’s great. Likewise though, there are also videos that need a lot of editing. In many respects, a well edited video is the kind that you are more likely to want to watch when you go on youtube. As such, make sure that you do your research into the best editing software to use – many people like to use Premiere Pro, but there are lots of choices out there. You will also need to find a way to make a thumbnail, though there are free tools such as Canva online that you can use for that, so you don’t need to spend lots of money on it.

Internet Connection

You can’t upload a video to youtube if you don’t have an internet connection – it’s a website, after all. It requires the internet in order to work. Of course, just any internet will not do. You could have terrible internet connection and spend 90 hours uploading a video, but who has the time for that? You most certainly do not, especially when you’re first getting started with your channel. You’re going to be uploading a lot of videos at first most likely, so spending hours uploading them really isn’t the ideal situation. Make sure that you do your research into some good internet service providers – look for a provider that offers fast internet for an affordable cost. If you have good internet access then you can upload things faster, and your upload isn’t going to get interrupted a lot either. It’s especially important if you plan on livestreaming to complement your youtube efforts.

Proper Lighting

If you intend to do things like singing videos or other videos that require you to record your face, it’s a good idea to ensure that you have the right lighting set up. This may be something like a ring light. Sure, you could use the natural lighting in the room, but that’s pretty fickle sometimes and may end up causing weird glares on your video. Consistent lighting is always a good idea for ensuring that your lighting doesn’t randomly change through the video. You can also get some background lighting if you want to make the video look more interesting – this could be things like string lamps, or even a lava lamp!

Conclusion

Now you have all of your gear ready, it’s time to get started on setting up your youtube channel! We wish you the best of luck!
