Apple has been granted another patent for an “Apple Glove.” This one (number 11,144,121) is for a “wearable interactive user interface.”
About the patent
In computing systems, a user input device may be employed to receive input from a user. Many traditional user input devices, such as keyboards, have a fixed or static layout.
However, Apple says that those limit the adaptability of the device. Additionally, traditional input devices may be rigid and substantially detached from a user. And Apple says that these limit the functionality of the input device.
On solution: an “Apple Glove” that could detect user hand motion that could be used in controlling electronic equipment. The finger-mounted units may hold components such as force sensors, accelerometers, and other sensors and for haptic output devices.
Summary of the patent
Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent: “Embodiments are directed to a user input device and methods related to the use thereto. In one aspect, an embodiment includes a flexible fabric attachable to a user having a first portion and a second portion. The first portion may be moveable in relation to the second portion.
“The embodiment may further include a controller configured to identify an input configuration based on a position of the first portion relative to a position of the second portion within a three-dimensional space. The embodiment may further include a haptic feedback structure disposed adjacent the flexible fabric and configured to provide haptic feedback based on the input configuration.”
