Notable apps and updates: October 25

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they deserve mention. Here are today’s picks.

Blackmagic Design has announced DaVinci Resolve 17.4, a new update which purportedly transforms the speed of DaVinci Resolve to work up to five times faster on the new Apple Mac models with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

With the speed increase, customers can now play back, edit and grade 8K projects even faster, and can work with up to 12 streams of 8K footage. DaVinci Resolve 17.4 also:

  • Adds Dropbox Replay integration. Projects will flow smoothly from DaVinci Resolve Studio directly to Dropbox Replay for easy video review and approval. Frame accurate colored markers, comments and annotations made in Dropbox Replay are almost instantaneously synced to the DaVinci Resolve timeline.
  • Increases the decoding speed of 12K Blackmagic RAW files, making it over 3 times faster and H.265 rendering is also 1.5 times faster. Plus, DaVinci Neural Engine performance is up to 4 times faster, for real time facial recognition, object detection and smart reframing! Support for ProMotion 120Hz displays makes playback and editing incredibly smooth and HDR viewers are also supported on the new Apple MacBook HDR displays.
  • For subtitling, includes automatic resizing of backgrounds and cursor placement when creating captions, as well as nested timeline subtitle tracks now auto-populating the main timeline to speed up creating captions.

Zevrix Solutions has released LinkOptimizer 6.1.1, a feature update to the company’s image workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. LinkOptimizer is designed tis ave users hours of manual processing through automatic InDesign link size reduction, as well as conversion of image formats and other time saving tasks. Version 6.1.1 adds an option to search analyzed links by name, which helps users quickly exclude specific groups of images from processing.

LinkOptimizer 1.1 can be purchased from the Zevrix website for $259.95; a “lite” version is available for $179.95. A demo is available for download.

The 6.1.1 update is free for LinkOptimizer 6.x users and $130 to upgrade from previous versions. LinkOptimizer requires macOS 10.12-12.x and Adobe InDesign / Photoshop CS6-CC 2021.
