Mac sales grow 9.4% year-over-year in quarter two

Apple now has 7.4% of the global personal computer market

The surge in personal computer (PC) demand continued through the second quarter of 2021 (2Q21) despite global component shortages and logistics issues, according to IDC.  And Mac sales grew 9.4% year-over-year.

Worldwide shipments of Traditional PCs — including desktops, notebooks, and workstations — reached 83.6 million units in the second quarter of 2021. That’s up 13.2% from the second quarter of 2020, according to IDC. Elevated demand for PCs combined with shortages that greatly impacted the supply of notebooks led to desktop growth outpacing that of notebooks during the quarter, adds the research group.

Apple saw Mac shipments of approximately 6.2 million in the second quarter of 2021. That’s up 9.4% year-over-year. The Mac now has 7.4% of the global PC market.

Ahead of Apple are Lenovo (23.9% market share), HP (22.2% market share), and Dell (16.7% market share). You should note that IDC doesn’t include tablets such as the iPad in its data.
