Apple TV’s “Wolfwalkers” wins Best Film at 2021 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards

It’s only the second animated film to do so

Winners have been announced for the 2021 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards, which took place virtually this year. Apple TV+s “Wolfwalkers” won for Best Film.

Deadline notes that it’s only the second time in history that an animation has won the award, following “Song Of The Sea” in 2015, which also came from the the Kilkenny-based Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon.

About “Wolfwalkers”

Here’s how “Wolfwalkers” is described: “In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, ROBYN, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, MEBH, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

The family friendly animated film starts Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, and Sean Bean in voice roles. It’s directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart.

“Wolfwalkers” won its first Annie Awards from ASIFA-Hollywood on April 17 in the following categories: Best Indie Feature; Best Character Design; Best Direction; Best Production Design; and Best Voice Acting. The awards honor the best in the field of animation.

It was also nominated for an Oscar for “Best Animated Feature Film,” and for a BAFTA [British Academy of Film and Television Arts] award for “Best Animated Film.”
