Apple hires former Google scientist to lead new AI research unit

Apple has hired former Google scientist Samy Bengio, who left the search giant amid turmoil in its artificial intelligence research department, according to Reuters.

Bengio is expected to lead a new AI research unit at Apple under John Giannandrea, senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, the article says, quoting two unnamed “people familiar.” Apple declined to comment on Bengio’s role.

Bengio is a Canadian computer scientist. At Google he led a large group of researchers working in machine learning including adversarial settings. He is also among the three authors who developed Torch in 2002, the ancestor of PyTorch, one of today’s two largest machine learning frameworks.

Giannandrea is also a former Google exec. The former head of Google’s search and artificial intelligence unit, he joined Apple in 2018 to handle the overall machine learning and AI strategy.”
