Worldwide PC — as in “personal computer” not just a Windows system — shipments totaled 69.9 million units in the first quarter of 2021, an increase of 32% from the first quarter of 2020, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. And, as the IDC research reported, it’s all good news for Apple’s Mac (although the IDC and Gartner results do differ).
The market rebounded from a weak first quarter of 2020 to record the fastest year-over-year growth since Gartner began tracking the PC market in 2000. The research group says that, globally, Apple sold approximately 5.6 million Macs in the first quarter of 2021, giving it year-over-year growth of 48.6%.
Apple places fourth among worldwide PC vendors, per Gartner, trailing Lenovo (25.1% market share), HP (21.4), and Dell (16.5). Note that neither Gartner nor IDC count the iPad Pro as a “personal computer”; if they did, Apple share would rise drastically.
When it comes to U.S. computer venders, Gartner says Apple sold approximately two million Macs in the first quarter of 2021, a year-over-year increase of 54.2%. Apple trails HP (27% of the U.S. market), Dell (26.6%), and Lenovo (15.7%).
