Apple TV+’s ‘Wolfwalkers’ and ‘Greyhound’ get Academy Award nominations

Apple TV+ has  picked up its first-ever Oscar nominations, with the acclaimed “Wolfwalkers” nominated for “Best Animated Feature Film” and the Tom Hanks film, “Greyhound,’ nominated for Best Sound.

“Wolfwalkers” is up against “Onward,” “Over the Moon,” “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” and “Soul” for “Best Animated Feature Film. “Greyhound” is up against “Mank,” “News of the World” (also starring Tom Hanks), “Soul,” and “Sound of Metal.” The winners of the 2021 Oscars will be announced at a live ceremony on April 25 on ABC.

Here’s how “Wolfwalkers” is described: In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, ROBYN, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, MEBH, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

The family friendly animated film starts Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, and Sean Bean in voice roles. It’s directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart.

“Greyhound” is written by Tom Hanks, who also stars. The movie is set early in World War II when an inexperienced U.S. Navy captain (Hanks) must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolfpacks. It’s based on a novel by C.S. Forester.
