share As noted by GeekWire, new figures from the IDC research group show that the Mac saw significant growth in 2020; however, it was the first year that Chromebooks outsold Apple’s desktops and laptops (IDC doesn’t count the iPad as a personal computer).
According to IDC’s year-over-year breakdown:
° The Mac’s global marketshare was up from 6.7% in 2019 to 7.5% in 2020.
° Chrome devices were up from 6.4% in 2019 to 10.8% in 2020.
° Windows computes were down from 85.4% in 2019 to 80.5% in 2020.
“While PC [personal computer] shipments are up across the board, it’s telling that macOS has also been gaining share while Windows fell below the 80% threshold for the first time in decades (in the past two quarters, though it was still above 80% for the year),” notes GeekWire.
The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) predicts the Mac laptop sales will overtake Chromebook this year — and further put a dent in Windows PC sales — as new Macs with Apple-developed processors roll out this year.
