Apple TV+ series, movies tally five Golden Globe nominations

Nominations for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, celebrating the best in television and film, were announced today. Apple TV+ tallied five nominations.

Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” was nominated for two awards in the 2021 Golden Globes and “On the Rocks” for one. The series has been nominated for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy.  And Jason Sudekis has been nominated for Best Performance in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy. 

“Ted Lasso” is racking up several awards and nominations. It’s been nominated for three Critics Choice Awards, named as one of the “AFI Television Programs of the Year,” and nominated for “Outstanding Score—TV Show/Limited” by the Hollywood Music in Media Academy.

In “Ted Lasso,” Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. In addition to starring, Sudeikis serves as executive producer, alongside Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs”) via his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content. Doozer’s Jeff Ingold also serves as an executive producer with Liza Katzer as co-executive producer. The series was developed by Sudeikis, Lawrence, Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt, and is based on the pre-existing format and characters from NBC Sports

Bill Murray was nominated for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture” for the Apple TV+ movie, “On the Rocks.” It’s a comedy starring Rashida Jones, Murray, and Marlon Wayans. Sophia Coppola directed from a script she wrote. It follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York. Apple describes it as a “bittersweet comedy.”

Also, the animated film, “Wolfwalkers,” has been notated for “Best Animated Film” and “Best Original Score, Motion Picture.” The animated fantasy adventure film is directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart. The film is the third installment in Moore’s “Irish Folklore Trilogy”, following his previous films The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts of Golden Globes for a fourth time. The awards show will be held (virtually) on Sunday, Feb. 28 on NBC.
