Apple, which runs the most widely used podcasting app in the industry, may launch a new subscription service that would charge people to listen to podcasts, according to The Information.
Quoting unnamed “people familiar with the matter,” the report says talks between Apple and production companies for a podcast service are underway, but there are no definite plans. If Apple does launch a podcast subscription service, it could be part of the Apple One bundle, as well as being offered as a standalone subscription a la Apple Music, Apple News+, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and Fitness+.
Loup Ventures, a research-driven venture capital firm, has talked of the viability of “Podcasts+, in which Apple will take a page from Spotify’s playbook and bundle premium podcasts (Podcasts+) with Apple Music and Apple One, at no extra charge for paying subscribers.
