Apple is transitioning the entire Mac line to “Apple Silicon” over the next two years, but the company says it will still support Intel’s Thunderbolt USB-C connectivity on the new computers.
“Over a decade ago, Apple partnered with Intel to design and develop Thunderbolt, and today our customers enjoy the speed and flexibility it brings to every Mac. We remain committed to the future of Thunderbolt and will support it in Macs with Apple silicon,” an Apple spokesperson told The Verge.
That said, the report notes that, so far, the tech giant doesn’t offer Thunderbolt support on any products outside of Intel-powered Macs. And the company’s ARM-based Developer Transition Kit also only features standard USB-C ports.
Apple Silicon is, per Apple, “world-class custom silicon to deliver industry-leading performance and powerful new technologies.” It involves customized ARM technology, as well as Apple’s own System on a Chip.
