Apple plans to manufacture new models of its iPhone SE in India, reports The Information, quoting an unnamed “person familiar with the matter.”
The tech giant will purportedly use Taiwanese contract manufacturer, Wistron, which already operates factories there. The Information notes that manufacturing the smartphone in India will help Apple avoid a 20% tax on imported smartphones.
Speaking of Wistron, the manufacture expects to have 50% of production outside China by 2021, according to Digitimes. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the Taiwan-based company has continued expanding its capacity worldwide, with plans to invest US$46.8 million in its plant in Texas, a maximum of $68.05 million to acquire equipment for its plant in Kunshan, China, and a maximum of US$76 million to purchase equipment for a plant in India.
Wistron also announced at the end of 2019 that it would invest in a plant in Vietnam that will enter mass production in 2021.
