Notable apps and updates, April 27-May 2

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they’re popular and deserve mention. Here are this week’s picks.

macOS

128bit Technologies has debuted Comic Fonts, a collection of 19 “classicly comic-al” fonts. The collection is a blend of styles that can be used for comics, manga, anime or any other design project.

All fonts are in OpenType font format, so they work on both Mac and PC systems. For a limited time you can download Script Fonts for only US$10, 50% off the regular price. The collection pricing includes a 10 computer, commercial use license. International character support (Western European) is standard for every font.

MacAppware has announced MacOptimizer 4.2, an upgrade to its disk utility app for macOS.

It’s designed to help you clean, repair, and organize your Mac. You can speed up your Mac, fix common problems on your computer, and organize your Mac desktop using the utility. Version 4.x boasts new features to analyze and boost memory, speed up Internet browsing, monitor CPU and battery usage, and more.

MacOptimizer 4.2 macOS 10.9 (64bit) and newer. It’s available for purchase on the MacAppware website for US$29.99.

Smile has launched PDFpen and PDFpenPro 12, an update of its PDF editing tool for Mac. Version 12 introduces Optimize PDF, a magnifier window, a callout tool, and DocuSign support for Pro users.

PDFpen provides a document reading, proofing, and navigating experience combined with a variety of editing tools, enabling users to sign PDFs, fill forms, and search and redact sensitive information. You can export to Microsoft Word, fix typos without the original document and add comments, images and highlight text.

Version 12 adds the ability to reduce PDF file sizes as much or as little as needed with a new Optimize PDF feature. The integration of compression methods such as MRC, CCITT reduces the file size while scanning, editing, and saving.

Also included, a magnifier window, a callout tool, customized paper styles and orientation selection for new documents, and for Pro users, DocuSign support. PDFpen is available for approximately US$85 and PDFpenPro for $140. Both require macOS 10.13 or later. Demo versions are available at https://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen.

Jumsoft has released updates to Toolbox for Keynote and Toolbox for Pages.

Toolbox for Keynote offers customizable items and ways to combine them: everything from fully designed themes, layouts, to stunning infographics, clipart and bullets and more. The update brings a revamp of the apps’ user interface, introduces a new and improved content structure, and adds usability improvements such as custom collections.

Toolbox for Keynote and Toolbox for Pages each contain over 30,000 items with content being updated regularly. Jumsoft’s new Toolbox for Keynote and Toolbox for Pages are now available to download/update on the Mac and iOS App Stores. Both are free, but tout in-app purchases.
