The Peabody Awards’ board of jurors has revealed its 60 nominees for the most compelling and empowering stories released in 2019 across TV, radio and digital media. Apple’s Dickinson series on Apple TV+ is among the nominees.
In addition to Dickinson, entertainment nominees are Chernobyl, David Makes Man, Dickinson, Fleabag, Float, Good Omens, Our Boys, Ramy, Stranger Things, Succession, Unbelievable, Watchmen, and When They See Us. The nod marks the first Peabody Awards nominations for Apple TV+.
Dickinson — which has been renewed for season two, but isn’t yet filming — is a half-hour comedy on Apple TV+ starring Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 3, True Grit) in the title role of 1800s poet Emily Dickinson. It’s set during Emily Dickinson’s era with a modern sensibility and tone.
Thirty Peabody Award winners will be selected from nominees in the categories of children’s and youth, documentaries, entertainment, news, radio/podcast and public service programming.
Notable documentary nominees include the Barack and Michelle Obama-backed, best documentary Oscar winner American Factory from Netflix and Participant Media; documentary Oscar hopefuls Apollo 11 from CNN Films, For Sama from PBS, One Child Nation from Amazon and The Edge of Democracy from Netflix; Showtime’s Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men; HBO’s Michael Jackson docuseries Leaving Neverland; and Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly.
The George Foster Peabody Awards program, named for the American businessman and philanthropist George Peabody. It was launched in 1940.
